Voice of Democracy — VFW Scholarship Program Description Voice of Democracy is the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) audio-essay scholarship program that asks high school students to record a patriotic, democracy-themed essay. Entrants submit a recorded essay on the annual theme and compete for national and department-level scholarships. The program focuses on civic education and expression through a structured, judged audio format. - Nearly 28,000 ninth–12th graders enter annually. - Entrants record an audio essay responding to the yearly theme. - Submissions advance from local VFW Posts to department and national judging. Eligibility This program targets high school students and requires adherence to format and submission rules set by local VFW Posts. Participants must be enrolled in grades 9–12 and prepare an audio essay on the current theme, accompanied by a completed entry form. There are also separate VFW contests for younger students (middle-school level) with distinct awards; check the specific contest rules for those programs. - Open to students in grades 9–12. - Essay must be recorded and submitted with a completed entry form. - Local participating VFW Post sponsorship is required. - Separate middle-school programs exist with their own rules and awards. Award Value Voice of Democracy distributes more than $1.6 million in scholarships and incentives nationwide each year, with multiple tiers of awards at department and national levels. The national first-place winner receives a $35,000 scholarship paid directly to an eligible American university, college, or vocational/technical school. Additional national awards include amounts up to $21,000, and each VFW Department first-place winner receives a minimum scholarship (at least $1,000). - Total program funding exceeds $1.6 million annually. - National first-place scholarship: $35,000 (paid to the school). - Other national awards: up to $21,000. - Department (state) first-place winners receive at least $1,000. Award Benefits (Leadership Experience) Beyond monetary awards, department first-place winners receive a sponsored leadership trip to an immersive youth program at Valley Forge. The Founding Forward’s Spirit of America Youth Leadership experience is a four-day program that includes mock congressional debates, a free enterprise challenge, historical site visits, and interactive educational activities designed to build leadership, critical thinking, and civic understanding. The trip is provided to every VFW Department winner through support from Twisted X. - Department winners receive a four-day youth leadership experience. - Program components: mock debates, enterprise challenge, historical tours, interactive learning. - Sponsored by Twisted X and offered to every department first-place winner. Application Process & Timeline Applicants must prepare a recorded essay that follows the current theme, complete the official entry form, and submit both to a participating local VFW Post. Download the 2026–2027 entry form from the VFW website, locate a sponsoring VFW Post, and confirm that your submission reaches the post by midnight on the specified due date. Exact deadlines and local submission windows vary by post and department, so verify date/time requirements with your sponsoring post. - Obtain and complete the 2026–2027 entry form. - Record your essay on the 2026–27 theme: “What a Veteran Taught Me About America.” - Submit the audio essay and form to a local participating VFW Post by the posted midnight deadline. - Confirm local post and department deadlines before submission.
