The Bachelor of Science in Nursing Scholarship Program (BSNSP) is a commendable initiative aimed at bolstering the number of proficiently trained nurses delivering direct patient care in qualified facilities across California. This program is administered by the Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI), an organization dedicated to enhancing and diversifying California's healthcare workforce. They achieve this by offering scholarships and loan repayments to health professional students and graduates who commit to providing direct patient care in underserved communities.

The BSNSP is primarily funded through a $10 surcharge applied to the renewal and licensure fees of Registered Nurses (RN) in California. In return for a 12-month service commitment, where the recipient practices and provides direct patient care in an underserved community, eligible applicants may receive up to $10,000. The overarching goal of this program is to increase the number of suitably trained Registered Nurses (RNs) providing direct patient care in underserved areas or qualified facilities within California.

Eligibility Criteria

Provider Eligibility Criteria

For an applicant to be considered for a BSNSP award, they must meet the following criteria:

• Begin their training program by September 30, 2024
• Enroll in a minimum of six semester units, or its equivalent, and maintain this until program completion
• Achieve and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or greater, from the most recent academic performance until program completion
• Graduate after March 31, 2025
• Have no other existing service obligations with other entities, including other HCAI programs
• Not be in violation of any other HCAI service obligation
• Commit to a 12-month service obligation in an underserved area or qualifying facility, providing 32 hours or more per week of direct patient care within six months of graduation
• Be a resident of California
• Complete and submit the application through the HCAI Funding Portal by December 13, 2024 at 3:00 p.m.

Eligible Disciplines

Applicants for the BSNSP must be currently accepted or enrolled in a Bachelor Degree Nursing Program that prepares them to become a Registered Nurse.
