Georgia HOPE Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by GAfutures
Here’s a clearer, classroom-friendly version of the HOPE Scholarship application and eligibility information — read this like a checklist you’d use to get everything done on time.
Required application
- You must choose one of two ways to apply each year:
1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), or
2. Complete the Georgia Student Finance Application (GSFAPP) online.
- Important: the FAFSA must be completed every year you want consideration.
Deadlines and timing
- The application deadline is the earlier of: the last day of your school term or your official withdrawal date.
- Recommendation: apply as early as possible. The sooner you submit the FAFSA or GSFAPP, the sooner your college can determine your eligibility and any awards.
- Note: individual colleges may have their own application steps or deadlines. Always check with the postsecondary institution you plan to attend.
Basic eligibility (what you must meet)
To receive the HOPE Scholarship initially after high school — and to keep it while enrolled — you must meet these requirements:
1. U.S. citizen or eligible non‑citizen.
2. Meet your postsecondary institution’s Georgia residency requirements.
3. Be enrolled as a degree‑seeking student at an eligible Georgia institution (University System of Georgia (USG), Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG), or an eligible private HOPE institution).
4. Be in compliance with Selective Service registration (if applicable).
5. Meet the institution’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy.
6. Be in good standing on all student loans and other financial aid programs (no defaults).
7. Be in compliance with the Georgia Drug‑Free Postsecondary Education Act of 1990, O.C.G.A. §20‑1‑20, et seq.
8. Not have exceeded the maximum award limits for any HOPE program.
Important notes about loans and refunds
- You cannot be in default on any federal or State of Georgia student loan, grant, or scholarship. If you are in default, you must repay the loan in full or otherwise resolve the default before HOPE eligibility can be determined.
- You cannot owe a refund on any State of Georgia scholarship or grant. Any required refund must be paid in full before HOPE eligibility can be determined.
Quick checklist (before you apply)
- Choose FAFSA or GSFAPP and plan to complete it every year.
- Apply early — don’t wait until the deadline.
- Verify your residency status with the college you’ll attend.
- Confirm you’re registered for Selective Service (if required).
- Check your loan/grant status so you’re not in default and don’t owe refunds.
- Review your chosen school’s SAP policy and any school-specific deadlines or forms.
