Horatio Alger Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Horatio Alger Association
The Horatio Alger Association offers more than 70 scholarship opportunities designed to help students move from potential to possession — that is, to make college a real and achievable next step. Below I’ll walk you through what to check and how to apply, in plain language so you can decide quickly whether to pursue this. How to apply - Read the eligibility rules below to see which awards you might qualify for. - Complete a single application — that one form will put you in the running for every Horatio Alger scholarship for which you are eligible (there are a few specialized awards that may require separate materials; check the full program details for exceptions). Who is eligible (general requirements) You must meet all of these to be considered: - Be a full‑time high school junior enrolled in Georgia. Note: 25 scholarships are specifically reserved for students from Walker, Catoosa, Dade, Chattooga, Gordon, Floyd, Whitfield, and Bartow counties. - Intend to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree at an accredited, non‑profit U.S. college or university right after high school (starting at a two‑year school and then transferring to a four‑year institution is allowed). - Demonstrate financial need — adjusted gross family income of $100,000 or less. - Be active in co‑curricular activities and community service. - Show integrity and perseverance in overcoming challenges or adversity. - Maintain at least a 2.0 GPA. - Be a United States citizen. A quick note from a teacher’s perspective If you meet most of these requirements and want college help, this is worth applying for — the one‑application process makes it efficient. Gather your transcript, a list of activities and service, and a short statement that shows how you’ve persevered; those are usually the pieces reviewers care about most. If anything is unclear, talk to your school counselor or contact the Horatio Alger Association for clarification before you submit.
