Scholarship Sponsored by National Society, Sons of the American Revolution
If you’re a student in grades 9–12 with an interest in the American Revolution, here’s a clear, teacher-to-student summary of the George S. & Stella M. Knight Essay Contest run by the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).
Who can enter

What to write
- Submit an original essay of 800–1,200 words.
- Pick a topic tied to the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, or the framing of the U.S. Constitution. Acceptable subjects include an event, a person, a philosophy, or an ideal from that era.
- Only one entry per student is allowed each contest year.
How entries are judged
Essays are evaluated on:
- Historical accuracy
- Clarity and organization
- Grammar and spelling
- Proper documentation of sources
How to enter
- Enter through the SAR chapter nearest your residence. If your local chapter doesn’t participate, you may be able to enter at the state society level.
- If you’re unsure where to submit, contact the state society or a “contact-at-large” for your area, or check the SAR website for chapter and contact information.
- Look up deadlines and submission details with your local or state contact before you begin.
Quick tips (from a teacher)
- Choose a focused topic you can cover thoroughly in 800–1,200 words.
