North Carolina's Aubrey Lee Brooks Scholarships

Overview
These scholarships were created by a trust established in 1955 from the estate of Aubrey Lee Brooks. They are administered centrally by the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority and are intended to help graduating high school seniors from a specific 14‑county region of North Carolina attend one of three in‑state universities.
Who is eligible
To qualify, an applicant must:
- Be a graduating high school senior and a permanent resident of one of these counties: Alamance, Bertie, Caswell, Durham, Forsyth, Granville, Guilford, Orange, Person, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Swain, or Warren.
- Be planning to enroll for the first time as a full‑time, degree‑seeking student at one of the following institutions: North Carolina State University, UNC–Chapel Hill, or UNC–Greensboro.
- Demonstrate financial need. The FAFSA Student Aid Index (SAI) must be no greater than $12,000.
- Complete residency determination through the North Carolina Residency Determination Service.
What you must submit (application checklist)
- Complete and submit the full electronic Aubrey Lee Brooks Scholarship application.
- An electronic academic transcript that includes final grades for the most recent fall semester.
- Electronic SAT and/or ACT score report(s), if available.
- A completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the appropriate school year.
Selection criteria and special awards
- There are 17 Brooks Scholarships awarded in total.
- One scholarship is reserved for a student from the Greensboro/High Point area.
- One scholarship is reserved for a senior at the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics who is from an eligible county.
- In addition to financial need, selection considers merit, leadership, character, and a commitment to preparing for a career as a useful and informed citizen.
Award benefits and additional support
- The scholarship is renewable each year provided the recipient continues to demonstrate financial need, remains enrolled full time at an eligible institution, maintains a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75, and demonstrates good citizenship.
- Brooks Scholars may also be eligible for additional funding for summer internships, research, or study abroad.
- A one‑time computer stipend of $2,500 is available to recipients.
