Amelia and Emanuel Nessell Family Scholarship Fund, established as a memorial, provides financial assistance for students in financial need, with priority consideration to Jewish applicants.
Application Instructions
Graduating seniors in the top 25% of their graduating class from a Duluth public or private high school may apply. Priority consideration will be given to Jewish applicants. Students should complete and submit in the DSACF Common Application by the deadline day. A complete application will include an academic transcript (including standardized test scores), recommendations (from at least one educator and one clergy) and financial need documentation.
Selection Criteria
The Scholarship Committee of the Community Foundation will select individual scholarship recipients. They will base their decision on the applicant's academic record, financial need, and written recommendations (one of which must come from a clergy) and involvement in community and extra-curricular activities.
Fund Story
In 1997 a scholarship trust fund was established as a memorial to Amelia and Emanuel Nessell. The Nessells moved to Duluth in 1920 and Emanuel served as a manager for the First Street Department Store. The four Nessell children, Sophie, Leonard, Louisa and Harry, attended Duluth public schools and graduated from Central High School. Emanuel Nessell died in 1951; Amelia followed him in 1983. The scholarship was established because the Nessells valued higher education and were committed to making educational opportunities available to those in financial need.
