Overview
This scholarship — the ALCOA Fund Scholarship — exists to help African American and Hispanic students from the Cleveland area continue their education. It’s intended for graduates of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) or graduates of Catholic schools in Greater Cleveland (preferably Cuyahoga County).
Who should consider applying
- Students who identify as African American or Hispanic and who graduated from CMSD or a Catholic school in Greater Cleveland.
- Students who demonstrate financial need.
- Preference is given to CMSD graduates who live in the City of Cleveland.
Eligibility checklist
To be eligible you must meet all of the following:
- Graduate of Cleveland Metropolitan School District or a Catholic school in Greater Cleveland (preferably Cuyahoga County)
- African American or Hispanic
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at time of application
- Enrolled in or planning to attend an accredited nonprofit college or university in Ohio
- Enrolled at least half-time (minimum 6 credit hours per term) if awarded as part‑time; full‑time enrollment is also acceptable
- Demonstrated financial need
How to apply
- Submit the Cleveland Foundation Scholarships General Application (this is the application used to be considered for this award).
Selection process
- Scholarship recipients are chosen based on eligibility and the completeness of the application, measured against the scholarship’s stated purpose and criteria.
Award amount and payment
- The award amount is determined by available funds and the number of recipients. Previous awards have ranged from approximately $2,000 to $5,000.
- Formal notification will be made by College Now.
- Payments are sent directly to the recipient’s institution and must be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies, and/or equipment required for coursework.
Requirements if you receive the award
- Maintain full‑time enrollment unless the award explicitly covers part‑time enrollment.
- Maintain a minimum 2.75 GPA while receiving the scholarship.
