Brief overview
Since 1991 the Union Plus Scholarship Program has awarded more than $5.9 million to students from working families. Over 4,200 families have received support to begin or continue post‑secondary study.
Who runs and funds the program
The program is administered by the Union Plus Education Foundation and is supported in part by contributions from providers of the Union Plus Credit Card, the Union Plus Personal Loan, and the Union Plus College Program. You do not need to participate in any of those programs to apply.
Who is eligible
- Current and retired members of participating unions, their spouses, and their dependent children (as defined by IRS regulations).
- At least one year of continuous union membership is required. The one‑year minimum may be met by the applicant, the applicant’s spouse, or the applicant’s parent (if the applicant is a dependent).
- The one‑year membership requirement must be satisfied by May 31 of the scholarship year.
What the selection committee looks for
This is a competitive scholarship. Applications are evaluated by a committee of impartial post‑secondary educators using these criteria:
- Academic ability (a 3.0 GPA or higher is recommended)
- Financial need
- Social awareness and appreciation of labor issues
- Quality of the required essays (essays can account for up to half of your total score)
Important dates and deadlines
- Applications become available in mid‑June.
- A complete application must be received by 12:00 p.m. (noon) Eastern Standard Time on January 31 of the scholarship year. Applications received after that deadline will not be considered.
- The one‑year union membership requirement must be met by May 31 of the scholarship year.
Award amounts and terms
- Awards range from $500 to $4,000.
- Awards are one‑time cash payments for study beginning in the fall of the awarded year.
- Students may reapply in subsequent years.
Practical tips (from a teacher)
- Aim for at least a 3.0 GPA and give your essays careful attention — they carry a lot of weight.
- Start gathering union verification and other documents early so your application is complete before the January 31 deadline.
- If you don’t win one year, apply again — past applicants have successfully reapplied in later years.
