Dr. Donald Suggs Scholarship

The Dr. Donald M. Suggs Scholarship is a prestigious award aimed at promoting the inclusion and retention of academically gifted undergraduate students from ethnic groups that are traditionally underrepresented in higher education. This scholarship is a tribute to Dr. Donald M. Suggs, a retired oral surgeon, newspaper publisher, arts patron, and esteemed community leader. His significant contributions to the City of St. Louis and the State of Missouri are acknowledged and celebrated by the University of Missouri-Columbia.
To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:
A) Achieve a composite ACT score of 27 or higher, or an SAT score of 1260 or higher for the new exam.
B) Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
C) Enroll at MU in the first semester following high school graduation.
D) Belong to a racial or ethnic minority group that is underrepresented in relation to the University's goal of achieving a diverse student body.
E) Preference will be given to students who reside in the greater St. Louis, Missouri metropolitan area.
The scholarship award varies depending on the student's residency status and other factors:
A) Missouri residents receive $15,000 per year.
B) Non-Missouri residents receive a waiver of nonresident tuition (approximately $15,838) for a total of 8 regular semesters (fall and spring). This waiver does not apply during summer terms and may be canceled or reduced if nonresident tuition is waived or paid by another source.
C) An additional amount of up to $7,000 is included for a study abroad experience.
D) A $2,000 stipend is provided for freshman year participation in the MU Discovery Fellows Research Program.
E) Recipients of the Dr. Donald Suggs Scholarship are also eligible to receive the Bright Flight Scholarship.
Please note that the Dr. Donald Suggs Scholarship cannot be combined with certain general University scholarships such as the Curator's Scholar Award, Excellence Award, Chancellor's Award, George C. Brooks Scholarship, Diversity Award, Mizzou Scholars Award, Mark Twain Nonresident Scholarship, Black and Gold Scholarships, Border State Scholars, and the Brazeal Honors College Endowed Diversity Scholarship. The amount of the Dr. Donald M. Suggs Scholarship may be reduced if the total of all federal, state, institutional, and private aid received by the student exceeds the cost of attendance as defined by the MU Student Financial Aid Office.
