Next Generation Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Architects Foundation
Overview — What this scholarship is about Architecture is a human-centered discipline: good buildings and spaces reflect the people who use them, help communities thrive, and express shared values. This scholarship began in 1970 with a grant from the Ford Foundation after Whitney Young Jr.’s 1968 call for architects to act with greater social responsibility. Its purpose is straightforward: to broaden the voices in architecture by supporting students from diverse backgrounds who are committed to using design to serve people and places. What we offer - Multiyear scholarships totaling up to $20,000 (renewable for up to five years; multiple awards are available). - Membership in a community of Next Generation Scholars — students selected for imagination, commitment to excellence, and a desire to shape the built environment. Who is eligible Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and meet one of the following academic categories: - A high school senior planning to enroll in a NAAB‑accredited architecture degree program. - A rising second‑year college student already enrolled in a NAAB‑accredited architecture degree program. - A student at a technical school or community college who has finished high school (or an equivalent) and intends to transfer into a NAAB‑accredited architecture program. - A student in the final year of a non‑NAAB four‑year bachelor’s program (B.A. or B.S.) who plans to enroll in a NAAB‑accredited graduate architecture degree program. Note on NAAB accreditation NAAB‑accredited programs include the five‑year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) or a four‑year pre‑professional bachelor’s degree followed by a Master of Architecture (M.Arch). Application — what to submit Applicants must provide the following materials: - A professional resume. - Two letters of recommendation. - A portfolio of 3–5 creative works (these do not need to be architecture‑specific). - Written responses to three short‑answer prompts, each limited to 300 words: 1. What influenced you to become an architect? 2. Describe a situation in which you positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to a group effort over time. 3. How do you view the potential of architecture to improve communities? Final notes This scholarship is intended to remove financial barriers and encourage a wider range of perspectives in architecture. If you care about the social impact of design and meet the eligibility criteria, we encourage you to apply.
