The Health Care Access and Information Department (HCAI) is committed to expanding and diversifying the healthcare workforce in California. This is achieved by offering scholarships and loan repayments to students and graduates of health professions who are willing to provide direct patient care in underserved communities. The Allied Health Scholarship Program (AHSP) is a key initiative in this regard. Funded through grants, donations, and special funds, the AHSP offers eligible applicants up to $15,000 in exchange for a 12-month service obligation. This service involves practicing and providing direct patient care in an underserved community. The ultimate goal of the AHSP is to increase the number of well-trained allied healthcare professionals providing direct patient care in underserved areas or qualified facilities within California. To qualify for an AHSP award, applicants must meet several criteria. They must have begun their training program by October 1, 2024, and be enrolled in at least six-semester units, or its equivalent, until the completion of the program. Applicants must also maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher, both for their most recent academic performance and until the completion of their program. Graduation must occur after March 31, 2025. Applicants must not have any existing service obligations with other entities, including other HCAI programs, and must not be in breach of any other HCAI service obligation. They must commit to a 12-month service obligation in an underserved area or qualifying facility, providing 32 hours or more per week of direct patient care within six months of graduation. Applicants must be California residents and must complete and submit their application through the HCAI Funding Portal by December 13, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. The AHSP is open to applicants who are currently accepted or enrolled in an accredited academic or certificate program that prepares them for a variety of healthcare professions. These include, but are not limited to, Anesthesia Technicians, Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics, Anesthesiologist Assistants, Health Educators, Perfusionists, Auto-Transfusionists, Home Health Aides, Pharmacy Technicians, Cardiovascular Technologists, International Board Certified Lactation Consultants, Phlebotomists, Certified Nurse Assistants, Licensed Midwives, Physical Therapy Assistants, Clinical Laboratory Scientists, Medical Assistants, Podiatrists, Degreed Nutritionists, Medical Imaging Technologists, Radiation Therapy Technologists, Dental Assistants, Medical Interpreters, Radiologic Technicians, Dental Hygienists, Medical Laboratory Technologists, Registered Dieticians, Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, Nuclear Medicine Technologists, Respiratory Therapists, Doulas, Orthoptists, Speech and Language Pathologists, Electrocardiogram Technicians, Orthotist/Prosthetists, Surgical Technicians, and Ultrasound Technicians.
