Background
ExceptionalNurse.com began in 2001 as a grassroots nonprofit created to support nursing students and nurses with disabilities. It was founded by Donna Maheady, Ed.D., APRN — a pediatric nurse practitioner and nursing educator with more than 40 years of teaching experience. Dr. Maheady’s doctoral research focused on the experiences of nursing students with disabilities, and she currently teaches as an adjunct faculty member at Utica College. Her commitment to this work is also personal: her daughter has HNRNPU, a de novo genetic mutation associated with epilepsy, limited speech, intellectual disability, and autism-spectrum characteristics.
Who is eligible
Applicants must be students with a documented disability who have applied to, or already been admitted to, a full‑time college or university program.
Application checklist
Please submit the following items together:
- Completed and signed application form.
- Three letters of recommendation from people who can speak to your academic abilities and character (not relatives).
- Essay (about 1–2 pages).
- Official transcripts from high school and/or any college coursework.
- Medical Verification of Disability Form.
