Overview

  • Two $1,000 scholarships are available through the American Agri-Women foundation:
    • Jean Ibendahl Scholarship — for women ages 18–23 (including recent high school graduates)
    • Sister Thomas More Bertels Scholarship — for returning students in agriculture age 24 and older

Purpose

  • Both scholarships support women connected to farming, ranching, or agribusiness who wish to take accredited courses directly related to agriculture: leadership, communications, rural sociology, technology, medicine, education, or other agricultural fields.

A little history

  • Jean Ibendahl Scholarship: Established in 1991 by educator and AAW member Jean Ibendahl of Tamaroa, Illinois, and later supported by a $10,000 endowment from Jean and her husband, Calvin.
  • Sister Thomas More Bertels Scholarship: Created in 1991 to honor Sister T. More Bertels, a founding mother of AAW and a long-time advocate for agricultural education.

Who is eligible

  • Must be a farmer or rancher, or the wife, daughter, or close relative of someone employed in agriculture.
  • Demonstrated economic or financial need is required.
  • Some knowledge of or work experience in agriculture is expected.
  • Academic achievement (GPA) or placement test results are considered; scholarship funds are intended for tuition for recognized courses related to agricultural communities.
  • Scholarships are awarded only once per individual.

Required materials

  • Completed application (see website for the form)
  • Three signed and dated letters of reference
  • Documentation of academic standing (transcripts or placement test results) as available
  • Documentation or statement demonstrating financial need and agricultural connection

Deadlines & timeline

  • Applications open January 1 and close March 1 each year (applications must be submitted by March 1).
  • Results will be posted on the AAW website (www.americanagriwomen.org) no later than June 1.
  • Only recipients will be notified personally.

  • Scholarship funds must be used for tuition.
  • Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
  • Each scholarship is $1,000.
