Gordon A. Rich Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Gordon A. Rich Memorial Scholarship
Purpose and spirit
Gordon A. Rich devoted his life and resources to helping people with limited opportunities. The Gordon A. Rich Memorial Foundation (GAR) exists to continue that work—supporting talented students who also demonstrate financial need so they can focus on learning rather than on debt.
Who the Foundation seeks
GAR is looking for students who combine strong academic ability, intellectual curiosity, leadership or significant extracurricular achievement, and real financial need. There is no single “type” of GAR Scholar: the winners will be diverse in background and interests, but similar in energy, promise, and motivation.
Eligibility (who may apply)
Applicants must meet all of the following:
- Be a dependent child of a full‑time employee working in the financial services industry (examples: commercial or investment banks, securities brokerages, insurance companies, fund/asset managers, credit card/finance companies, and similar firms as determined by the Foundation). The parent/guardian must be currently employed and have at least five years’ experience in the financial sector.
- Be a graduating high‑school senior enrolling as a full‑time first‑year student in pursuit of a four‑year bachelor’s degree at an accredited U.S. college or university.
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and rank in the top 20% of the graduating class.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
What the selection committee looks for
The selection process emphasizes a mix of measurable achievement and personal qualities:
- Academic record and GPA (evidence of challenge and achievement).
- High‑school activities and leadership.
- Thoughtful, well‑written responses on the application.
- Documented financial need.
Academic ability and intellectual promise
GAR expects scholars to have strong grades (top 20% of their class) and to show clear evidence of curiosity or accomplishment in at least one area—this could be classroom excellence, original research, independent projects, or deep work in a particular subject. In short: applicants should have pushed themselves academically and shown a genuine passion for learning.
Extracurricular contribution
We value students with an “extra dimension.” That can mean a broad record of contributions across multiple activities or a focused pursuit of excellence in one area. Examples include athletics, community service, journalism, visual and performing arts, or leading meaningful school or community initiatives. The committee rewards both breadth and depth.
Financial need
GAR’s mission is to reduce the financial burden on promising students so they can spend time on academics and activities that matter. Financial need is a required element of each application and will be assessed from the information you provide on the application.
Continuing eligibility and renewal process
Scholarships are reviewed annually. To remain eligible, recipients must:
- Maintain full‑time enrollment and be in good standing at their college or university.
- Not be on academic probation or suspension.
Each December the Foundation sends a renewal form to recipients. In April, recipients will be asked to confirm full‑time enrollment, submit a current transcript, and provide a detailed update on courses, projects, and activities from the award year.
Final note
GAR Scholars will not all look the same. What they will share is exceptional talent, drive, and financial need—and a willingness to use their abilities for the benefit of their communities. If that describes you, read the requirements carefully and make sure your application reflects both your achievements and the story behind your need.
