Jefferson Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Jefferson Scholars Foundation
The Jefferson Scholars Foundation helps bring exceptionally capable undergraduates to the University of Virginia through two scholarship tracks: the Jefferson Scholars Program and the Walentas Scholars Program. Both are designed to develop leaders, scholars, and engaged citizens who will contribute to the University and the wider world. What the scholarships do - Both programs provide generous financial support so students can pursue academic interests, develop talents, and get involved in their communities. - Recipients also gain access to a broad network of current Scholars, Jefferson Fellows, alumni, and volunteers, plus enrichment activities that extend learning beyond the classroom. Awards (what they cover) - Each scholarship is intended to cover the full cost of attendance for four years at UVA, and to fund supplemental enrichment experiences. - Virginia residents: more than $40,000 per year (roughly $200,000 total). - Non-Virginia residents: more than $80,000 per year (roughly $365,000 total). Enrichment opportunities Scholars in both programs are encouraged to broaden their horizons through a range of activities, such as: - International travel - Career development and networking - The Institute for Leadership and Citizenship - Connections with alumni - Exploratory Fund for pursuing new interests - Research collaborations with Jefferson Fellows - A speaker series featuring leaders and experts How selection works Jefferson and Walentas Scholars are chosen through a careful, multi-stage process that looks for exceptional achievement and strong potential for impact inside and outside the classroom. The main stages are: 1. Nomination — High schools nominate promising students. 2. Regional review — Nominees are evaluated within their geographic region. 3. Final selection — Top candidates are selected as Scholars. 2024–25 highlights - 6,999 secondary schools invited to nominate across 84 regions - 3,035 students nominated - $13,000,000 awarded in undergraduate support for the 2024–25 academic year If you’re a student who might be a fit, talk to your school counselor about the nomination process — these scholarships are as much about potential and character as they are about grades.
