Southern California Member Chapter Scholarships — clear, practical summary

Purpose
- The scholarships are intended to recognize and encourage students connected to the AIST Southern California Chapter by providing financial support while they attend an accredited college or university, full- or part-time. There are two awards available: the AIST Member Scholarship and the Engineering Scholarship.

Awards
- Two scholarships are awarded each year.
- Each scholarship is worth US$1,500.

Who is eligible
Member Scholarship
- Eligible applicants are:
- an active AIST Southern California Chapter member, or
- the child, grandchild, niece, nephew, or spouse of an active AIST Southern California Chapter member, or
- an AIST student member enrolled through the Material Advantage Student Program.
- The applicant must be attending (or planning to attend) an accredited college or university and must live in or attend school in the Chapter’s geographic area.
- The applicant may be enrolled full- or part-time.

Engineering Scholarship
- Eligible applicants are students pursuing a career in engineering, the sciences, or other majors related to iron and steel production.
- Eligible applicants are:
- a child, stepchild, grandchild, or spouse of an active Southern California Chapter member, or
- an AIST student member enrolled through the Material Advantage Student Program.
- The applicant must be attending (or planning to attend) an accredited college or university and must live in or attend school in the Chapter’s geographic area.
- The student must be enrolled in an engineering field to receive this scholarship.

Selection
- Applications are reviewed by the Southern California Chapter Executive Board.
- Awards are made without regard to financial need.

Rules (important — read carefully)
1. The scholarship must be used at an accredited college or university.
2. The student must begin the course of study in the fall of the same year the scholarship is awarded. Eligible students may be freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate students.
3. Engineering Scholarship applicants must be enrolled in an engineering program.
4. Member Scholarship applicants must meet the family/member relationship or student-member criteria listed above.
5. The AIST Foundation will send the scholarship stipend as a lump sum to the college or university to be deposited in the student’s account.
6. If a student’s studies or admission are delayed or interrupted for any reason, the Chapter Secretary must be notified immediately. Delays or interruptions may result in forfeiture of the award.

Required documents (must be submitted with the application)
1. Completed scholarship application form.
2. Essay:
- Member Scholarship: a brief essay (250 words or less) describing your involvement in high school, college, or your professional life and explaining why you should receive the scholarship.
- Engineering Scholarship: an essay that demonstrates your interest in the steel industry, outlines your professional goals, and explains how your skills could help the industry.
3. Current resume with work experience (highlight internships or jobs related to the field), extracurricular activities, leadership roles, and other honors or scholarships.
4. Two recommendation letters from a counselor, teacher, or professor.
5. A copy of current high school or college transcripts.
