Judith A. Quinn Detroit Member Chapter Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST)
Overview
This scholarship — the AIST Judith A. Quinn Detroit Member Chapter Scholarship — exists to recognize and encourage talented students who are interested in pursuing careers in the iron and steel industry. The Detroit Member Chapter administers the award. High school seniors preparing to enter college and current undergraduate students are encouraged to apply. Students may reapply each year.
A brief history
In 2013 the scholarship was named to honor Judith A. Quinn, a pioneer for women in the Detroit-area steel industry. Ms. Quinn served in leadership roles for many years, including as Secretary-Treasurer for the AISE Detroit District Section (1985 and 1998) and as secretary of the AIST Detroit Member Chapter from 2004 to 2013.
Awards
- Each year up to four scholarships are awarded: two at US$2,500 and two at US$5,000.
- The exact number awarded may depend on the number of qualified applications received.
- Preference is given to students in engineering, metallurgy, or materials science; if there are no applicants in those fields, awards may be made to students in other majors related to iron and steel production.
- Awards are intended for students in the AIST Detroit Member Chapter area who meet the eligibility criteria.
Who is eligible
- The scholarship is open to a child or grandchild of an AIST Detroit Member Chapter member who has been in good standing for at least two consecutive years.
- Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students (or high school seniors who will be full-time undergraduates in the coming fall) enrolled or planning to enroll at an accredited North American university.
- Majors should be in engineering, metallurgy, or materials science (or closely related fields tied to iron and steel production).
- Minimum cumulative GPA: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Applicants should demonstrate interest in pursuing a career in the iron and steel industry.
- Awards are made without regard to financial need.
Selection process
A Scholarship Award Committee reviews applications. The Committee includes the Chair, the Secretary, and up to four additional Detroit Member Chapter members.
Important rules and disbursement
- The scholarship must be used at an accredited college or university.
- The student must begin or continue the course of study in the fall of the same year the scholarship is awarded.
- The AIST Foundation will send the scholarship as a lump-sum payment to the college or university to be deposited in the student’s account.
- If a student’s admission or studies are delayed or interrupted for any reason, the Secretary of the AIST Detroit Member Chapter must be notified immediately; failure to do so may result in forfeiture of the award.
- Students may submit new applications each year throughout their college education.
Application checklist (all files must be submitted as unprotected PDF files)
1. Current resume listing work experience and extracurricular activities, including leadership roles.
2. Essay (maximum two pages): state your professional goals, explain why you are interested in a career in the iron and/or steel industry, and describe how your skills could benefit the industry.
