What the award is for
- Purpose: To honor an outstanding senior defenseman who has shown excellent sportsmanship, strong defensive skill, and true team play throughout his high school hockey career.
- Origin: The scholarship was established by John and Cathryn VanderSalm in memory of their son Matthew, a 1988 graduate of Gull Lake High School.
Who is eligible
- Type of student: Graduating high school seniors (part-time students are also listed as eligible).
- League requirement: Must play on a team in the South Central Michigan High School Hockey League.
