Matthew VanderSalm Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established by John and Cathryn VanderSalm in memory of their son Matthew, a 1988 graduate of Gull Lake High School. The award is intended to recognize an outstanding senior defenseman in the Southwest Michigan High School Hockey League who displays the highest degree of sportsmanship, skill, and team play during his high school career.
Eligibility Criteria
Graduating high school senior that plays hockey on a team in the Southwest Michigan High School Hockey League (SMHSHL). Must be a defenseman on the hockey team (does not include goaltender). Applicant must be a player who plays the game of hockey not only with intensity but with intelligence; one who understands the physical aspect of the game without feeling the need to retaliate; one who plays the game well and with good sportsmanship. Must be planning to attend a two- or four-year accredited college or university within fifteen months of graduation from high school.
