Kids' Chance of Michigan Scholarship

Kids’ Chance of Michigan is a non-profit organization, recognized under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, that is dedicated to providing scholarships to children of workers who have tragically lost their lives, suffered severe injuries, or encountered debilitating illnesses due to work-related incidents. These scholarships are granted annually, and students are encouraged to apply each year they meet the eligibility criteria.
Eligibility Criteria for Students
Students who wish to apply for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:
- Be 26 years old or younger at the time of application
- Be a dependent of a worker who has been killed, seriously injured, or experienced a debilitating illness in a work-related incident
- Have a demonstrated financial need for post-secondary education
- Be accepted or planning to attend a college, university, or technical school, either at the graduate or undergraduate level
- Be pursuing a degree as a full-time or part-time student
- Meet other eligibility requirements as specified
Required Documentation
Applicants must provide the following documents:
- A completed Kids’ Chance Scholarship Application, including student, family, and educational institution contact information
- A transcript of the most recent grades (an unofficial transcript is acceptable)
- A copy of the Student Aid Report (SAR) from the FAFSA, including the Student Aid Index (SAI), if attending a 2-year or 4-year college or university
- A brief description of the applicant’s educational and career goals
- Proof of a compensable injury/illness claim, such as a determination letter or claim number from the state workers’ compensation board, or a death certificate
- Basic employer information of the parents
Eligibility for the Scholarship
For a child to be eligible for the scholarship, their parent must have suffered a catastrophic injury or fatality in a Michigan work-related accident that is covered by workers’ compensation. The parent's injury or death must be compensable under Michigan Workers’ Compensation Law, and there must be no dispute regarding the compensability of the parent's injury or death.
Scholarship Criteria
The applicant must meet the standards set by the Executive Committee of Kids’ Chance of Michigan, LLC. These standards are primarily based on the financial needs of the student. The applicant must be a Michigan resident, aged between 17 and 22, and must demonstrate financial need related to the parent’s injury or death.
Scholarship Duration
The scholarship is valid for one academic year or term and may be contingent upon academic performance. Students may reapply at the end of each academic year or term for the following year or term. Renewals are subject to the availability of funds.
Scholarship Coverage
Scholarships range from $3750.00 to $7500.00, depending on the availability of funds and the number of qualified applicants. These scholarships can be used at any accredited college, community college, trade, or vocational school within Michigan. The scholarships are paid directly to the educational institution and may cover tuition and books not covered by other grants or scholarships.
Required Documentation for Application
The Scholarship Committee will only review applications that are accompanied by all the documents referenced in the scholarship application form.
