Michigan American Legion Auxiliary Medical Career Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Michigan American Legion Auxiliary
Overview
This scholarship is offered by The American Legion (Department of Michigan) for students planning careers in skilled trades. It supports young people who choose hands-on, technical pathways after high school — construction/building, automotive, advanced manufacturing, or energy — through an apprenticeship, trades training program, or a two‑year college program that leads to state or federal certification.
Award
- Two (2) scholarships will be awarded for 2026.
- Each scholarship provides $1,000 per year for two years (total possible award per recipient = $2,000), with the first $1,000 paid the first year and the second $1,000 paid the second year upon meeting continuing eligibility.
Who is eligible
- Michigan resident.
- Age 17–21 at the time of application.
- Planning to pursue a career in one of these skilled trades via:
- post–high school trades training or apprenticeship, OR
- a two‑year college degree program in a skilled trade that leads to state or federal certification.
- Preference will be given to descendants of veterans, but that is not required.
What the money can pay for
- Tools, specialized clothing, gear, and safety equipment.
- Fees and other expenses for post‑secondary skilled‑trades schools, training programs, or apprenticeships.
- Fees and other expenses for two‑year college skilled‑trades programs.
Application deadline and materials
- APPLICATION AND SUPPORTING MATERIALS must be received by April 3, 2026, to be considered. (Be sure your materials show proof of enrollment in the eligible program when required.)
Selection and disbursement process
- Recipients are chosen by the American Legion Department of Michigan’s Education and Scholarship Committee in conjunction with scholarship donors.
- Checks will be issued either to the student, the school/training program, or the employer/business, depending on whether funds will be applied to supplies or tuition. If funds are requested for supplies, proof of the supply costs will be required before payment is issued.
- Second‑year disbursement is contingent on submission of first‑year transcripts and proof of enrollment in the second year of the trades program or college course — or proof of continued employment in the trade if that is the pathway being used.
If you’re interested, start gathering your enrollment documentation and any receipts or cost estimates for tools and supplies now so your application is complete and on time. If you have questions about qualifying programs or required documents, contact the American Legion Department of Michigan’s scholarship committee for clarification.
