Here’s a clear, teacher-friendly summary of the scholarship so you can decide whether to apply or share it with students.
Overview
- Each spring up to ten scholarships are awarded. Each scholarship is $2,000.
- Application deadline: February 15 (annually).
Who may apply
- High school seniors, undergraduates, and students already enrolled in a master’s program may apply.
- Applicants must intend to teach Latin at the K–12 level.
- You do not have to have taken the National Latin Exam to apply.
- If you are already receiving another National Latin Exam award, you may not apply for this scholarship.
Renewal and length of funding
- The scholarship is renewable while the recipient remains a student in a bachelor’s or master’s program and is planning to teach Latin at the K–12 level.
- Maximum total funding: up to four years for a bachelor’s degree program and up to two years for a master’s degree program. The scholarship committee may grant exceptions in special cases.
Professional development and mentoring
- The National Latin Exam (NLE) will pay the cost for one American Classical League (ACL) Institute for each recipient, usable any time from the end of the recipient’s junior year in college through the recipient’s third year of teaching. If you live outside the U.S., a comparable professional-development opportunity may be covered instead. (See the ACL for details: https://aclclassics.org/)
- Recipients may request informal mentoring from experienced Latin teachers for their first three years of teaching.
