The American Rocketry Challenge, recognized as the world's most extensive rocket contest, engages nearly 5,000 students from across the nation annually. This competition provides a unique platform for middle and high school students to delve into the world of rocket science. They are given the chance to design, construct, and launch model rockets, thereby gaining practical experience in tackling engineering problems.

The Aerospace Industries Association and the National Association of Rocketry, with the backing of over a dozen aerospace company sponsors, organize the ARC. They also collaborate with organizations such as NASA and the Federal Aviation Administration. This annual challenge serves as the aerospace industry's premier program, aimed at inspiring students to explore academic and career opportunities in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Understanding the Rules

  • Each team participating in the challenge comprises 3 to 10 students from grades 6 to 12, a supervisor, and an official Rocketry Challenge mentor.
  • The rules of the competition are slightly modified each year to introduce a fresh challenge to the participants.

Guidance for Rocketry Novices

If you're new to rocketry, don't worry. The American Rocketry Challenge has a nationwide network of aerospace professionals and rocketry experts from the National Association of Rocketry and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. These mentors are ready and willing to guide your team through the process of organizing, building rockets, and exploring potential career paths in this field.

Victory Rewards

  • Teams that make it to the Finals compete for a share of over $100,000 in cash prizes. Additionally, special awards are given for various activities throughout the day.
  • The team that secures the first place at the National Finals is rewarded with an all-expenses-paid trip to represent the United States in the International Rocketry Challenge.
