Overview
Mr. Edward C. Tang created this scholarship in 2007 to help lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Asian and Pacific Islander (API) students afford post‑secondary education. The scholarship supports students who want to pursue education with pride and without shame.

What the award provides
- Up to four students are selected each year.
- The program awards up to $100,000 in combined scholarships annually.
- Awards may be renewed for up to three additional years (maximum total of four years), provided the recipient meets the annual renewal requirements.

Who is eligible
To apply you must meet all of the following:
- Self-identify as Asian/Pacific Islander (at least 25% API ancestry) and as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, and be actively involved in the LGBT community.
- Be a graduate of a high school in one of these nine Bay Area counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Napa, Sonoma, or Solano.
- Plan to enroll full time (minimum 12 units per semester/quarter) at an accredited institution — this includes colleges, universities, community colleges, vocational schools, or graduate programs.
- Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
- Demonstrate financial need.
- Demonstrate academic promise.
- Have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) for all schools attended.
- Be between the ages of 17 and 25 at the time you apply.

How to get the application
- Download the 2026 application as a PDF (fillable using Adobe Acrobat Reader). Note: if you open the PDF in a web browser it may not be fillable.
- You may type your information into the PDF, then print and sign the form.

Application submission requirements (read carefully)
- The scholarship manager must receive the completed application packet and all supporting materials by the application deadline. Supporting materials include your personal statement, letters of reference, transcripts, proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency, and financial documentation.
- Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Applications submitted by postmark date, fax, or email will NOT be accepted — the packet must be received by the deadline.
