Tang Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Silicon Valley Community Foundation
Purpose
Mr. Edward C. Tang established this scholarship in 2007 to provide financial support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Asian and Pacific Islander (API) students pursuing post‑secondary education. The intent is simple: help LGBT API youth pursue their educational goals proudly and without shame.
Award details
- Up to four students are awarded each year.
- Combined awards total up to $100,000, distributed over as many as four years.
- Scholarships are renewable for up to three additional years (four years total) provided renewal requirements are met each year.
Who is eligible
To apply you must meet every item below:
- Self‑identify as Asian/Pacific Islander and as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (minimum 25% API ancestry) and demonstrate involvement in the LGBT community.
- Be a graduate of a high school in one of these Bay Area counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Napa, Sonoma, or Solano.
- Plan to enroll full time (minimum 12 units per semester/quarter) at an accredited institution (two‑ or four‑year college, university, community college, graduate school, or vocational school).
- Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
- Demonstrate financial hardship.
- Demonstrate academic promise.
- Have a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) for all schools attended.
- Be between the ages of 17 and 25 on April 30, 2026.

Deadline and delivery instructions
- The scholarship manager must receive a completed application packet and all supporting materials by 5:00 p.m. on April 30, 2026.
- Late or incomplete applications will NOT be considered.
- Postmarks, faxes, and emailed applications will NOT be accepted.
