About the Bill H. James Foundation
A scholarship fund focused on supporting aspiring African American engineers studying at accredited four‑year colleges and universities in California.

Who is eligible?
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Enrollment: must be pursuing a degree in an engineering program at an accredited four‑year college or university in California.
- Undergraduates: must be entering their junior or senior year in the upcoming academic year and plan to carry a minimum of 12 units per semester/quarter.
- Graduate students: must have at least two academic semesters (or the equivalent of one year) remaining to complete a master’s degree and plan to carry a minimum of 8 units per semester/quarter.
- Minimum GPA: 3.0.

Application checklist (what you must submit)
1. Complete and submit the online Scholarship Application form.
2. Combine the following supporting documents into a single PDF and upload it with your application:
- (Optional) One signed reference letter from a college professor or employer on official letterhead.
- A copy of your unofficial college/university transcript. If you are not yet enrolled, include an acceptance letter.
- A professional photo of yourself.
- A current resume.
- A one- to two-page essay describing an engineering project you would like to develop. Explain how increasing diversity in engineering could improve that project.

Final reminders from your teacher
- Double‑check that all supporting documents are merged into one PDF before you submit—applications with separated files may be delayed or disqualified.
- Keep your essay focused and specific: name the problem you’d solve, the engineering approach you’d take, and why diverse perspectives make the solution stronger.
- If you have questions, consult the application portal or contact the foundation through the provided application site. Good luck—apply early and take pride in how far you’ve come.
