What it is
- The Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference is a five-day, immersive summer program in Washington, D.C., now in its 25th year.
- Fifty-one high school juniors (one student from each state plus the District of Columbia) are selected. The program’s motto: Dream. Dare. Do.

Why this matters
- You’ll get behind-the-scenes access to D.C. newsrooms, meet top journalists and digital storytellers, and work with peers who are just as curious and driven as you are.
- It’s a rare chance to learn how professional news and multimedia stories are made — from reporting to podcasts, photo essays, documentaries and more — while exploring the nation’s capital.

What selected students receive
- Free, five-day trip to Washington, D.C., June 21–26, 2026 — hotel, airfare and meals paid.
- A $1,000 college scholarship.
- Direct mentoring and advice from leading journalists, media entrepreneurs and news influencers.
- A national peer network of 50 classmates and ongoing connections to alumni working at places like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Apple, ABC, NBC’s Today, USA TODAY and digital startups.

Who should apply
You should apply to represent your state if you:
- Are a current high school junior (a rising senior by the conference dates) and will graduate in 2027.
- Are interested in journalism or multimedia storytelling (writing, photo essays, documentaries, podcasts, other digital media).
- Consider yourself a “free spirit” — someone willing to take risks, lead with new ideas, act with courage, or accomplish things beyond expected circumstances.
- Can attend the entire conference in person, June 21–26, 2026.
