Geiger Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Island Institute
The Geiger Scholarship — clear, practical support for Maine island students
What this scholarship does
The Geiger Scholarship helps students who live on Maine’s year‑round, unbridged islands pay for off‑island learning and travel experiences. Examples include summer camps, semester study away, and structured gap‑year programs that broaden academic, cultural, or personal horizons.
Who can apply
You must meet at least one of these:
- Be a middle school through college student living on a year‑round, unbridged Maine island.
- Be currently enrolled in — or have graduated from — the highest grade level available at your island school.
- Be a magnet student who demonstrates a commitment to your island school and is in (or plans to return for) at least a second year there.
How often you can receive the award
Students may receive up to four Geiger Scholarships over their academic life:
- once in grades 6–8
- once in grades 9–12
- once in college
- once for a gap year
What to include in your application
Be prepared to provide:
- Personal and school information
- Program details (name, dates, total cost)
- A personal statement explaining why this program matters to you
- One reference
Deadlines
Applications are accepted twice each year: November 30 and February 28.
Award amounts and conditions
- Up to $10,000 for semester programs.
- Up to $5,000 for summer programs.
Award size depends on the quality of the application (scored by rubric) and the pool of applicants. Recipients must use their award and travel within one year of receiving it. Exceptions and special circumstances are considered case‑by‑case.
A special opportunity: Yale Young Global Scholars
Thanks to a generous donor, we can fully fund (tuition and program deposit) one student per summer to attend the Yale Young Global Scholars Program. The student must apply to and be accepted by that program. More information: https://globalscholars.yale.edu
After your program
Within 30 days of finishing your program, you must submit:
- A brief written reflection on your experience
- Up to five photos (at least one with you in it)
Quick teacher tip
Start your application early, get feedback on your personal statement, and ask a teacher or mentor for a strong reference. If you have questions about eligibility or special circumstances, reach out — exceptions may be possible.
