The Smith Foundation, a benevolent organization, annually extends financial scholarships to deserving students from Alabama. The application process commences each fall, usually around September or October, and concludes in the first week of January. The announcement of the application process is made on the foundation's website and all high schools across the state are duly informed through written communication or phone calls to alert relevant school staff such as counselors and English teachers. To access the application, one must follow the instructions provided on the Smith Foundation's website.
The scholarships awarded by the Smith Foundation range from $500 to a substantial $20,000 for undergraduate studies. These scholarships are designed to be supplemental last-dollar awards, meaning the Smith Foundation steps in to provide funding after all other scholarships, aid, or grants have been exhausted (excluding student loans which are not permitted). Students who are selected for the Full Scholarship Program receive a comprehensive support system including mentors, internship coaches, co-op, professional development guidance, and the potential to qualify for Study Abroad Scholarships. Exceptional students who successfully complete the full program are eligible to apply for graduate and professional scholarships to further their academic pursuits.
The Smith Scholarship Program is a rigorous accountability program that demands superior academic performance and active leadership participation. Each participating university will have a dedicated team, led by Team Leaders, to provide assistance and supervise required tutoring, counseling, and cultural event attendance.
Smith scholars are expected to fulfill certain obligations such as volunteer work, community service, and attendance at Smith-sponsored events and seminars. Above all, Smith Scholars should possess a genuine desire to contribute to society and help others.
Scholarships are awarded in April for the subsequent Fall and Spring academic year. Typically, between 10 to 15 full scholarships are granted, with additional partial awards also provided. Full scholarships are renewable subject to the completion of a renewal application and adherence to the Foundation's guidelines.
Eligibility criteria for applicants include a minimum 2.5 GPA, graduation from an Alabama High School, and evidence of volunteer and community service. Additionally, applicants should have demonstrated resilience in overcoming personal and financial hardships.
