Jessica Lynn Herman Memorial Scholarship — Summary for Applicants Purpose This scholarship awards support to graduating seniors from schools in the Huntington Beach High School District who plan to continue their education after high school. Who is eligible To apply you must meet each of the following: - Be a graduating senior from the Huntington Beach High School District. - Plan to enroll as a full-time student (minimum 12 units) at an accredited college or university. - Hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. - Demonstrate a genuine interest in both the humanities (arts, literature, history, culture, etc.) and the sciences. This interest can be shown through coursework, extracurricular activities, independent study, or related projects. - Actively serve as a mentor or tutor to youth in your community. - Show evidence of selflessness in your activities or daily interactions — for example, volunteering, community service, or consistent acts that prioritize others. - Be self-motivated and able to explain how you drive your own learning and growth. Application essays (supplemental questions) Please respond to both of the prompts below. Each response should be between 300 and 500 words. 1) Mentoring and tutoring Describe how you have served as a mentor and/or tutor to young people in your community. What did you do, what challenges did you face, and what impact do you believe your work had on others? 2) Interests in humanities and sciences Explain your interests in BOTH the humanities and the sciences. Which classes, activities, projects, or experiences have helped you explore these areas? How have these interests shaped your goals? Submit thoughtful, specific answers that show your contribution and your curiosity.
