Yankton Sioux Tribe Higher Education Program

The Yankton Sioux Tribe P.L. 93-638 Higher Education Program is a supplementary initiative designed to provide financial assistance to college students. However, it is important to note that this program should not be the sole source of financial aid. Students are strongly encouraged to explore all other available financial aid options, including the Pell Grant (FAFSA).
The deadlines for the YST - Higher Education Program are as follows:
For students residing off-reservation:
- July 1st: For the upcoming academic year, beginning with the Fall semester.
- December 1st: For students who did not attend college in the Fall semester.
- January 1st: For students who received an award for the Fall semester, Fall semester grades and Spring semester class schedule must be submitted to be considered for a second semester award.
For students residing on-reservation:
- September 1st: For the upcoming academic year, beginning with the Fall semester.
- January 1st: For students who did not attend college in the Fall semester.
- January 31st: For students who received an award for the Fall semester, Fall semester grades and Spring semester class schedule must be submitted to be considered for a second semester award.
Please note that the higher education institution chosen by the student must be an accredited college as listed in the National Directory/Registry of Approved and Accredited Colleges. Any student who fails to meet the application deadline will be placed on a waiting list.
To apply, students must submit a completed application along with all required documents to the Higher Education Office. The following documents are necessary for an application to be considered:
1. Higher Education/Adult Vocational Training application.
2. Financial Needs Analysis form (found on the last page of the application packet). This form must be completed by your school's financial aid office and returned to our office. It is the student's responsibility to ensure this form is completed and returned.
3. Letter of acceptance from the school you are attending.
4. High school transcripts or GED transcripts.
5. Transcripts from any previously attended college or university.
6. Native American Tribal Affiliation certification.
7. Previous semester grades (for returning students).
8. Class schedule for the current semester.
It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure all required documents are complete and submitted to the correct offices. Please keep copies of all documents for your records.
The Higher Education Program is only able to assist undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited college. Please note that awards cannot be made for online classes.
