Nursing Loan-For-Service

Scholarship Sponsored by New Mexico Higher Education Department

Value: $16,000.00
Awards Available: 10
Deadline : Jul 01, 2026

Here’s a clearer, teacher-style version you can use. I’ve reorganized the information so students can quickly find what matters and what they need to do.

Overview
This Nursing Loan‑for‑Service helps increase the number of nurses in New Mexico’s shortage areas by providing educational loans to students enrolled in nursing programs. In return for the loan, you must agree to practice as a health professional in a designated shortage area in New Mexico. For every year you work in a designated shortage area, part of the loan is forgiven; if you fulfill the entire service agreement, up to 100% of the loan can be forgiven. If you don’t satisfy the service commitment, penalties will apply.

Who is eligible
- New Mexico resident for at least 12 consecutive months
- Officially accepted into a nursing program at a New Mexico public college or university
- Enrolled at least half‑time
- Demonstrate financial need (complete FAFSA and meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements)
- Willing to declare intent to practice in a designated New Mexico shortage area

How to apply (step‑by‑step)
1. Complete the FAFSA. This is required.
2. Submit the Loan‑for‑Service Application through the Submittable system.
3. If you’re a current recipient and want funding next year, reapply each year.

Important dates and where to apply
- Application window: opens May 15 and closes July 1 each year.
- The application will be posted on the program page starting May 15 and removed on July 1. (Apply during the window — late submissions won’t be accepted.)

Award amount and duration
- Awards are based on demonstrated financial need.
- Maximum award: $16,000 per year.
- The award covers one year at a time; you may reapply annually and renew for up to four years if you continue to meet eligibility requirements.

Key reminders (teacher tips)
- Meet FAFSA and SAP requirements before the Submittable application — don’t wait until the last minute.
- Keep a copy of your application and any correspondence.
- Understand the service obligation before accepting the loan. Forgiveness is earned year‑by‑year while working in an approved shortage area; failure to complete the service agreement triggers penalties.
- Plan your coursework and clinical schedules so you remain at least half‑time and in good academic standing.

If you want, I can help you prepare a checklist or draft the statement declaring your intent to practice in a shortage area.
