Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program

Key Eligibility Criteria for U.S. Scholars

For non-U.S. citizens, kindly refer to the Non-U.S (Visiting) Scholar programs.

Prospective Fulbright U.S Scholars are required to fulfill all eligibility criteria by the application deadline. This includes meeting the specific eligibility requirements for the award, unless exceptions are mentioned in the award specifics.

The comprehensive Fulbright policies for U.S. Lecturers and Research Scholars can be accessed here (Chapter 600).

U.S. Citizenship

Applicants must possess U.S. citizenship by the application deadline. Permanent residency is not adequate.

Dual Citizenship: There might be instances where a dual citizen may be ineligible to participate in a Fulbright program in their other country of citizenship due to the laws or policies of the host country. Each award description mentions if this is a factor that could lead to ineligibility in the requirements section.

1. Fulbright Scholar Awards

The majority of the awards offered are Fulbright Scholar Awards, which include opportunities for professionals, artists, and scholars at all career stages. These awards vary in terms of location and eligibility, and some may be limited to certain career levels or types of scholars. All of this information is detailed in the award description.

Here are some opportunities within the U.S. Scholar program:

  • Scholar Award
  • Global Scholar Award
  • Arctic Initiative
  • Amazonia

2. Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Awards

The Distinguished Scholar awards are considered the most esteemed appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program. These awards are open to scholars with over seven years of experience in their field of expertise, although some awards may have additional eligibility restrictions. Distinguished Scholars are expected to actively collaborate with host institutions to promote mutual understanding and knowledge exchange.

3. Fulbright Postdoctoral Awards

The Postdoctoral Awards offer newly graduated scholars the chance to conduct research and receive professional training overseas. These awards may include limited teaching opportunities. They are open to scholars who have received a doctoral degree (Ph.D., J.D., M.D., Ed.D., etc.) within five to seven years of the start of the fellowship, as stated in the award description. The degree must be conferred before the start of the award. There is no requirement for institutional affiliation in the United States.

4. Fulbright International Education Administrator Awards

This award offers international education professionals and high-ranking higher education officials a chance to participate in a two-week intensive seminar. This seminar offers insights into the host country’s education system and facilitates the establishment of networks with U.S. and international colleagues.

The Distinguished Scholar awards, as the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program, are open to scholars with more than seven years of experience in their discipline or area of expertise. Additional eligibility restrictions may apply to some awards. Distinguished Scholars are expected to actively engage host institutions in promoting mutual understanding and knowledge sharing.
