Overview

The AAPT Board of Directors administers scholarships targeted to individuals preparing to teach high school physics. These awards are supported by an endowment established by Barbara Lotze and are restricted to U.S. citizens enrolled at U.S. institutions. Eligible applicants include undergraduate students in teacher-preparation curricula and high school seniors entering such programs. The program is managed through AAPT and recommendations are made to the Board of Directors for final approval.

Eligibility

Applicants must declare their intent to pursue a career in high school physics teaching and be actively pursuing or planning coursework that leads to that career. Eligible applicants are undergraduate students enrolled in accredited two- or four-year colleges or universities, or high school seniors accepted for such enrollment. Candidates must demonstrate promise of success in their studies. At the time scholarship funds are received, recipients must meet the stated enrollment and citizenship requirements.

Award Details

Recipients receive a stipend and professional membership benefits to support their teacher preparation. The award provides up to $3,000 to individual recipients and includes a complimentary one-year AAPT Student Membership. The scholarship may be awarded to the same individual for as many as four years, subject to ongoing eligibility and selection. Awards are intended to offset costs associated with completing a program of study in preparation for high school physics teaching.

Application Timeline

Applications are accepted online and may be submitted at any time. Applications with all required materials, including letters of recommendation, received by December 1 will be considered for recommendation at the AAPT Winter Meeting. Applications submitted outside that window will be considered for recommendation at subsequent winter meetings as materials are completed. Final recommendations are made to the AAPT Board of Directors at the winter meeting.
