About SEG Scholarships
These scholarships from the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) support students who want to study geophysics and related geosciences. They’re aimed at attracting high-achieving high school seniors and college students who plan careers in applied geophysics. Awards are given worldwide and are intended to recognize academic merit and real commitment to the field.

Key facts
- Application window: 1 November – 1 March each year (online).
- Award amounts: US$500 to US$10,000 per academic year; the average award is about US$2,800.
- Number of scholarships depends on donor support; recipients come from many countries.

Who is eligible
You qualify if you:
- Are a high school senior planning to start college next year, or an undergraduate or graduate student; and
- Have above‑average grades; and
- Intend to pursue a college program that leads toward a career in applied geophysics.

How applications are evaluated
- Online applications are accepted from 1 November through 1 March.
- From mid‑March through mid‑May, a committee of professional geophysicists independently reviews and ranks applications.
- In late May the committee meets to reach consensus and establish final rankings; top-ranked applicants are matched to available scholarships.
- Applicants are notified of results in mid‑June. Between June and September enrollments are verified, acceptance paperwork completed, and funds distributed.

Requirements to renew a scholarship
Renewal is based on demonstrated commitment, collaboration, and leadership in activities that promote geophysics. To be considered for renewal, you must participate in at least one of the following:
- Hold paid student membership in SEG or be a member of an SEG Student Chapter;
- Volunteer or participate in SEG or SEG‑partnered events (helping with learning, networking, or professional development);
- Attend SEG workshops, forums, seminars, or conferences; or
- Submit publications or organize outreach events on behalf of an SEG Student Chapter.

How to apply (checklist)
- Submit your completed online application between 1 November and 1 March.
- Include current transcripts.
- Provide email addresses for two faculty members who have agreed to serve as references.

Support and impact
Donations from SEG supporters make these scholarships possible. Because donor support varies year to year, the total number and size of awards depend on available funds.

2025–2026 selection summary
- The Scholarships Committee received 361 applications.
- Committee members reviewed and ranked applications individually; a composite forced rank was produced for six classifications (freshman, undergraduate, graduate, each split into North American and International).
- Lists of eligible applicants were also reviewed by donor advisory boards for restricted scholarships; advisory recommendations were considered during final awards.
