Think of this as your quick guide to the American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year — clear, organized, and with the important details you’ll need to remember.
What to know first (timeline)
- Nomination window: November 1 through March 1 each year.
- All nomination packets must be received by the nominee’s American Legion Department (state) no later than March 1.
- Each Department Selection Committee chooses one Department winner and forwards that winning packet, along with the committee member list, to The American Legion National Headquarters by April 1.
How the process works
- Prepare and submit the nomination packet to your state American Legion Department by March 1.
- The state Selection Committee reviews nominations and selects the Department’s nominee.
- The Department sends the chosen packet and committee member list to National by April 1.
- National evaluates Department winners and names the national Eagle Scout of the Year and runners-up.
Awards and benefits
- National winner: $10,000 scholarship.
- Three runners-up: $2,500 scholarship each.
- The national winner will also travel with The American Legion’s Youth Champion Delegation and be recognized at the Annual National Convention each August.
Conditions for receiving the scholarship
- Scholarships are payable only after the student enrolls in an accredited trade school, college, or university in the United States.
- Funds are disbursed via an online request that requires action from both the student and the school.
- The award must be used within four years of the student’s post–high school graduation date. Time spent on active military duty or a religious mission does not count against that four-year period.
