In 1966, the Colorado Masons' Benevolent Fund Scholarship Committee was established with the noble aim of supporting students in their pursuit of higher education. Since its inception, the committee has awarded scholarships totaling over $8.5 million to more than 700 students attending higher education institutions within Colorado. Each scholarship can amount to as much as $7000 annually, renewable for four years, culminating in a total potential award of $28,000. The primary criteria for these scholarships are leadership, maturity, financial need, and academic ability. Importantly, these scholarships are awarded without regard to race, creed, color, gender, or any Masonic affiliation. The only stipulations are that the applicant must be a graduating senior from a Colorado public high school and plan to attend a higher education institution within the state.
The Scholarship Committee, which is responsible for selecting the recipients each year, is composed of six highly qualified individuals and a chairman. They operate under the guidance and approval of the Grand Master. However, the scholarship administrator, who manages the day-to-day operations of the program, does not participate in the selection process. The number of scholarships awarded each year is contingent upon the earnings of the Colorado Masons' Benevolent Fund and is determined by the Fund's Board of Trustees. For instance, in both 2005 and 2006, 15 new scholarships were awarded, while a lesser number were granted in previous years. This year, we are proud to announce 16 new scholarship recipients.
The application process for these scholarships is facilitated exclusively through public high school counselors. Each year in late October, the scholarship administrator sends the application materials and instructions to every public high school in Colorado, ensuring that all eligible students have the opportunity to apply.
