Duluth Building and Construction Trades Council Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation
Overview
Each year Boreal Waters awards more than $800,000 in scholarships to students across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. These funds, donated by individuals, families, and local organizations, help learners of all ages move into post-secondary education—whether that’s a two- or four-year college, a technical program, or other training—and ultimately give back to their communities.
If you’re planning the next step after high school, use the scholarship search tool to find awards that match your background, interests, and where you live. Most scholarships are available through a single Universal Application that opens in December 2025 and closes on February 24, 2026.
Duluth Building & Construction Trades Council Scholarship Fund — Quick Guide
Background
This scholarship was created from proceeds when the Shoreview House of Hope was sold. Shoreview had been established in the 1980s to provide housing for patients and families traveling to Duluth for medical care. The Duluth Building & Construction Trades Council—recognized for that community service—used the sale proceeds to establish a permanent scholarship fund.
Who is eligible
- Parent or legal guardian must be a member of one of the 17 unions affiliated with the Duluth Building & Construction Trades Council.
- Applicant must be a graduate of a school within Boreal Waters’ service area.
- Minimum GPA: 2.75.
- Preference is given to students pursuing healthcare careers, but students heading into other fields are encouraged to apply.
Award
- $2,500 for one year
How to apply / timeline
- Apply using the Boreal Waters Universal Application (opens December 2025; closes February 24, 2026).
Tips from a teacher
- Start early. Gather your transcript and anything that proves your parent or guardian’s union membership (union card, letter from the union, or other documentation).
- If you’re interested in healthcare, make that clear in your application essay—explain your goals and why healthcare appeals to you. If you’re choosing a different path, explain how your chosen program will help you contribute to your community.
- Ask one or two people for a recommendation early (a teacher, coach, or employer).
- Keep copies of everything you submit.
If you have questions, check the Boreal Waters scholarship pages or talk with your school counselor for help preparing your application.
