What the scholarship is for
- The Hubert A. Nelson Scholarship Fund helps Duluth and Superior high school seniors who plan to major in business or accounting. Awards are intended for students who will attend the University of Minnesota Duluth or the University of Wisconsin–Superior.
- A little background: Hubert A. Nelson was born in Duluth in 1913, graduated from the University of Minnesota, served with the FBI, worked as treasurer of W. S. Moore Mining Co., and later helped with downtown Duluth redevelopment through the Duluth Development Co.

Who is eligible
To apply you must:
- Be a graduate (or graduating senior) of one of these high schools:
- Duluth Denfeld, Duluth East, Harbor City International, Marshall School, Superior Senior High School, Lakeview Christian Academy, or Maranatha Academy
- Plan to attend either:
- University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) or University of Wisconsin–Superior (UWS)
- Be majoring in Business or Accounting
- Demonstrate financial need
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0

Award amount and renewal
- Up to $2,000 per year.
- Renewable for up to 4 years (maximum total of $8,000).

How to apply (timeline)
- This scholarship is part of the Universal Application.
- Application window: December 1 – February 13.
- You only need to complete ONE Universal Application:
1. Create a profile in the scholarship portal.
2. Fill out the first page of the Universal Application — it will filter you into the scholarships for which you qualify.

How awards are paid and other important details
- Funds may be used for expenses at any accredited college, university, or technical/vocational school.
- Award payments are mailed directly to the school:
- Fall payments mailed July 15–30
- Spring payments mailed December 15–30
- If you plan to transfer schools, contact DSACF (the scholarship administrator). A transfer does not automatically transfer the scholarship. If the transfer happens after funds were disbursed, reprocessing can take up to 90 days.

Tax information (brief)
- DSACF recommends seeking tax advice about scholarship awards.
- Per the IRS, scholarships, fellowships, and other grants are tax-free only if:
1. You are a candidate for a degree at an eligible educational institution with regular faculty and enrolled students; and
2. The scholarship amounts are used for tuition, required fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for courses.
