DAV Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Disabled American Veterans
Volunteer service is central to the DAV’s purpose: helping veterans live fuller, more independent lives. Whether students are assisting at Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers or supporting veterans in their own communities, those volunteer hours make a real, measurable difference— and they can also open the door to scholarship support.
What this scholarship is for
- Who it’s for: Volunteers age 21 or younger who have completed at least 100 hours credited through DAV or DAV Auxiliary.
- What you must submit: An application that includes an essay explaining what volunteering for veterans means to you. Anyone may nominate a candidate — including the student themself.
- Where the money can be used: Any accredited institution of higher learning (universities, community colleges, vocational schools, etc.).
Important rules about timing
- You must use the full scholarship amount before you turn 25, or within six years of receiving it — whichever is later.
Who may nominate
- The applicant (self-nomination)
- Voluntary Service Program Managers at VA medical centers
- DAV department and chapter members
- Friends and family
Need more volunteer hours?
- You can earn hours at VA medical centers and through Local Veterans Assistance Programs (LVAP). Make sure your time is officially credited to Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Check the DAV website or contact your local DAV chapter to find opportunities and learn how to record your hours.
Quick checklist before you apply
- Confirm you are age 21 or younger.
- Verify you have at least 100 hours credited through DAV or DAV Auxiliary.
- Prepare a thoughtful essay about your volunteer experience and what it means to you.
- Arrange a nomination (self-nomination is allowed) and gather any documentation requested by the application.
If you have questions about how hours are recorded or where to find volunteer placements, your local DAV chapter or the DAV website is the best place to start. Good luck — your volunteer work matters, and this scholarship is one way to recognize that commitment.
