DAV Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Disabled American Veterans
Volunteer service is central to DAV’s work: helping veterans live full, high-quality lives. If you’re a young person who’s given time to veterans, this scholarship is designed to reward that commitment.
Who this is for
- Students age 21 or younger who have completed at least 100 volunteer hours credited through DAV or DAV Auxiliary.
- Any eligible student may apply; the application requires an essay describing what volunteering for veterans means to you.
- Nominations may come from the applicant themselves, Voluntary Service Program Managers at VA medical centers, DAV departments or chapters, friends, or family.
Eligibility checklist (quick)
- Age: 21 or younger at the time of award.
- Service: Minimum of 100 hours credited through DAV or DAV Auxiliary.
- Use of funds: Scholarship may be applied at any accredited institution (university, college, community college, vocational school, etc.).
- Timing: The scholarship must be used in full before the recipient turns 25, or within 6 years of receiving it—whichever is later.
How to apply / what to include
- A short, personal essay explaining why serving veterans matters to you.
- Proof of your volunteer hours credited to DAV or DAV Auxiliary.
- A nomination (you can nominate yourself) or endorsement from an eligible nominator.
Need more hours?
- Volunteer opportunities that count include work at VA medical centers and through the Local Veterans Assistance Program (LVAP).
- Make sure your hours are officially credited to Disabled American Veterans—ask the Voluntary Service Program Manager or the LVAP coordinator to record them.
If you’re close to the 100-hour mark, reach out to your local VA or LVAP, confirm how they credit hours to DAV, and plan a few more volunteer shifts so your application is complete.
