University of Alaska Scholars Program
Scholarship Sponsored by University of Alaska
The UA Scholars Award is a prestigious scholarship of $12,000, bestowed upon students who have demonstrated exceptional academic prowess by ranking in the top ten percent of their class in Alaskan high schools by the end of their junior year. This award can be utilized to offset the cost of attendance at any institution within the University of Alaska system.
The inception of the UA Scholars Award in 1999 was driven by a threefold purpose. Firstly, it was designed to motivate middle and high school students in Alaska to strive for academic excellence. Secondly, it aimed to support schools in their endeavor to provide high-quality education. Lastly, it sought to encourage the brightest high school graduates from all over Alaska to pursue their higher education at the University of Alaska.
The UA Scholars Award continues to fulfill its purpose by retaining Alaska's top high school graduates within the state as they further their education at the University of Alaska. These scholars not only enhance the academic atmosphere at UA but also grow into their roles as future leaders of Alaska. Representing every corner of the state, they serve as a bridge between their communities and the university.
To provide a brief overview, the UA Scholars Award is a $12,000 scholarship granted to Alaskan high school students who are in the top 10% of their class by the end of their junior year, as determined by their respective schools. The award can be used at any University of Alaska campus and is distributed in increments of $1,500 per semester over eight semesters, provided the scholar maintains eligibility.
The award covers eligible expenses such as undergraduate tuition, fees, room, board, books, supplies, qualified study abroad, national student exchange, and other educational costs incurred for attendance at the University of Alaska.
Eligibility for the award is determined by the students' academic standing at the end of their junior year, as designated by their high school. Students must be either US Citizens or aliens lawfully admitted for permanent residence.
