Meyerhoff Scholars Program

Scholarship Sponsored by University of Maryland, Baltimore County

Value: $22,000
Awards Available: 60
Deadline : Dec 01, 2022

Meyerhoff Scholars are selected for their interests in the sciences, engineering, mathematics, or computer science and their plans to pursue a Ph.D. or combined M.D./Ph.D. in the sciences or engineering. The selection committee considers academic performance, standardized test scores, recommendation letters, and proven commitment to community service.

Historically, application to the Meyerhoff Program was initiated through nomination. While it is no longer a requirement to be nominated for our program, it is highly encouraged. Nominations are most frequently submitted by high school administrators, guidance counselors, or teachers. Deserving students may also be nominated by other adults who are influential in their educational and personal lives, including community leaders, mentors, and family.

The Meyerhoff Scholars Program is open to all high-achieving high school seniors who have an interest in pursuing doctoral study in the sciences or engineering, and who are interested in the advancement of minorities in the sciences and related fields. Students must be nominated for the program and are most typically nominated by their high school administrators, guidance counselors, and teachers.

Meyerhoff Scholars receive four-year scholarships:

1) In-State: $5,000 – $15,000 (award range per year)

2) Out-of-State: $10,000 – $22,000 (award range per year)

*Per academic year, to assist in covering tuition, mandatory fees, and other expenses

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the Meyerhoff Scholars Program, prospective students must have at least a "B" average in high school science or math courses, and many applicants have completed a year or more of calculus. Preference is given to those who have taken advanced placement courses in math and science, have research experience, and have strong references from science or math instructors. In recent years, a strong preference has been given to those students interested in the Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. (over the M.D.).

Students must meet all eligibility requirements:

A) Minimum of 600 on the Math component of the SAT or a composite score of 24 on the ACT

B) Cumulative High School GPA of a 3.0 or above

C) Aspire to obtain a PhD or the combined MD-PhD in Math, Science, Computer Science, or Engineering

D) Display commitment to community service

E) Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States
