Meyerhoff Scholars Program

The Meyerhoff Scholars Program is a prestigious initiative that seeks out students with a keen interest in the fields of science, engineering, mathematics, or computer science. The program is designed for those who aspire to pursue a Ph.D. or a combined M.D./Ph.D. in these disciplines. The selection committee evaluates candidates based on their academic performance, standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, and a demonstrated commitment to community service.

In the past, the application process for the Meyerhoff Program was initiated through a nomination system. Although a nomination is no longer a prerequisite, it is still highly recommended. Nominations are typically submitted by high school administrators, guidance counselors, or teachers. However, other influential adults in a student's life, such as community leaders, mentors, and family members, can also nominate deserving students.

The application and selection process for the Meyerhoff Scholars Program is as follows:

July 1: The Nomination Form becomes available. Nominated students will be contacted in mid-September (and on a rolling basis afterwards) with instructions on how to apply to the program.

August 31: The Meyerhoff Scholars Program Application is made available on the Scholarship Retriever platform.

September 15: Letters explaining the eligibility criteria and how to access the online nomination forms are sent to principals and guidance counselors.

October 15: We encourage nominations to be submitted by this date, but late submissions will not result in any penalties for the student. Correspondence encouraging application to the Meyerhoff Scholars Program is sent directly to the nominee’s mailing address and/or email address as provided on the nomination form. Please note: the nomination form will close at 9:00am EST, December 1, 2024.

November 1: This is the UMBC Admissions Early Action Deadline. Before applying to the Meyerhoff Scholars Program, students must first submit a general UMBC application for undergraduate admission. We encourage students to take advantage of the Early Action admissions deadline. One week after applying, students will receive their UMBC campus ID and password, which are necessary to access the Meyerhoff application. Applicants can apply for UMBC Regular Admissions Decision beyond the November 1 deadline.

December 1: This is the Meyerhoff Online Application Priority Deadline. Applications and supporting documents will be accepted beyond this date (with no penalty to the applicant) until the online submission portal closes on January 15, 2025. We strongly encourage submission no later than January 5 to facilitate timely review of your application.

January 15: This is the final day to submit an application and the date by which letters of recommendation must be uploaded to Scholarship Retriever.

January 31: Invitations to participate in one of two Meyerhoff Selection Weekends are mailed to top applicants who meet the eligibility criteria, including submission of a completed UMBC undergraduate admissions application and a Meyerhoff Scholars Program application. Invited students are required to take the UMBC Math placement test prior to their Selection Weekend.

April 1: Decision letters from the Meyerhoff Program are mailed to all applicants.

May 1: This is the deadline for students to accept or reject Meyerhoff and UMBC admission invitations. This deadline includes students who applied under early action.
