David Barrett Memorial Scholarship - Award: $12,000 - Application period: February 15 – April 15, 2027 - Frequency: Awarded biennially Purpose and eligibility This scholarship recognizes an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in at least a three‑year accredited interior design program. The committee looks for demonstrated interest and skill in working with classical design ideas (think Greek and Roman principles) and in using traditional materials such as historically informed furniture and fabrics. You are encouraged to be inventive in how you translate those traditions into your work — projects can be in workplace, civic, residential, hospitality, historical restoration, or any other typology. Required application materials Prepare the following items for submission: - Design portfolio: 8–12 pages showing work that reflects a sustained engagement with classical design and traditional materials. - Portfolio statement: up to 500 words explaining the portfolio and how it connects to the scholarship criteria. - Personal statement: describe your goals, interests, and how classical design influences your practice. - Transcript: an unofficial copy is acceptable (or other proof of current enrollment). - Letter of recommendation. - Biographical statement. - Headshot. A few practical tips from a teacher - Use the portfolio statement to point out where and how classical principles appear in each project—this helps reviewers see your thinking quickly. - Choose images and details that make your use of materials and furniture evident; clarity is better than quantity. - Make sure your personal and biographical statements show both your passion for the field and concrete examples of your work or research. If you’d like, I can help you draft or polish any of the statements or review a portfolio outline before you submit.
