The Dan and Vicky Hancock Scholarship for Mechanical Engineering Excellence helps students who plan to earn a college degree in mechanical engineering by providing financial support. About the Hancocks Dan Hancock is a Kettering alumnus who spent 43 years in automotive engineering at General Motors, rising to Vice President of Global Strategic Alliances. He is an SAE Fellow, a former SAE International President and board member, and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2011. Dan and Vicky Hancock are committed to giving back to the engineering community through philanthropy and volunteer work. Who this scholarship is for This award is intended for students who combine academic promise with demonstrated leadership and service, and who are committed to pursuing mechanical engineering at an ABET-accredited U.S. program. Preference is given to applicants who plan to attend or already attend Kettering University. Eligibility requirements - U.S. resident. - Open to students at any undergraduate level (freshman through senior). - Must be planning to pursue, or currently pursuing, a Mechanical Engineering degree through a U.S. ABET-accredited program. - Freshmen: planning to enroll in an ABET-accredited mechanical engineering program. - Upperclassmen: currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited mechanical engineering program. - GPA: incoming freshmen need a minimum unweighted high school GPA of 3.50; upperclassmen need a minimum cumulative college GPA of 3.0. - Two letters of recommendation: - One addressing academic strengths. - One addressing extracurricular involvement or employment (preferably related to the intended degree or career). - FAFSA on file; Expected Family Contribution (EFC) must be at or below $15,000. - Demonstrated leadership/service: applicants must describe a leadership role (inside or outside school), explain how they developed leadership skills, note the size of the team(s) they led, and explain how those skills will support their future career. If you meet these criteria and are serious about mechanical engineering, this scholarship is worth applying for—pay close attention to the letters of recommendation and the leadership narrative, as those components are important to the selection committee.
