Shawn Carter Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Shawn Carter Foundation
Think of the Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund (SCSF) as a practical partner for students who are ready to work for a college degree but need help clearing some of the financial and logistical hurdles. Here’s what a smart student (and a careful planner) would want to know. What SCSF does - SCSF awards grants directly to the college, trade school, or vocational program to help cover tuition and related educational costs — books, lab fees, travel, and some living expenses. - Grants are available from the time a student is admitted through graduation, as long as the student qualifies and reapplies each year. - In return, Shawn Carter Scholars give back: they perform community service and mentor younger, aspiring Scholars. Who the Scholars are - Our applicants come from many backgrounds but share one thing: determination to earn a degree despite obstacles like interrupted schooling, poverty, teen pregnancy, or past incarceration. - Typical profile of recent Scholars: - 71% raised in single-parent households - 70% are first-generation college students - 60% come from households with incomes at or below $40,000 Who can apply Eligible applicants include high school seniors, GED recipients, college students (2‑year or 4‑year), and students at accredited vocational or trade schools who meet the requirements below. Basic requirements - U.S. citizen or permanent resident - 25 years old or younger - Minimum 2.0 GPA (first-time recipients typically have GPAs between 2.0 and 3.0; students with higher GPAs are still encouraged to apply) - Demonstrated financial need (selected applicants usually have an annual household adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less) - Pursuing a first undergraduate degree at an accredited, degree-granting institution If you’re thinking about applying, keep these points in mind: the fund is aimed at motivated students who need help staying in school and finishing. The application process is competitive but designed to find students who will both benefit from and contribute back to their communities.
