Who this is for
This fellowship is designed for students pursuing a PhD in Economics at George Mason University who plan to pursue an academic career.
Important deadline
Applications for the 2026–2027 academic year must be submitted by February 1, 2026.
What the fellowship provides
The award totals up to $160,000 over as many as four years and includes:
- A monthly living stipend
- Full tuition coverage (up to nine credits per semester)
- Hands-on experience as a research assistant, working closely with Mason faculty
Who can apply
You are eligible if you either:
- Are currently enrolled in Mason’s PhD program in Economics, or
- Are applying to Mason’s PhD program in Economics
If you are not yet enrolled, submit the M standard application for fall admission and indicate on that application that you wish to be considered for funding.
About the program
This is a competitive, full-time fellowship that trains students in market process economics, public choice, and institutional analysis. Fellows work on projects that use those perspectives to study global prosperity and social change. Graduates of the program have gone on to secure tenure-track positions at colleges and universities across the United States and Europe. Fellows also become part of a wider network of Mercatus students, alumni, and scholars engaged in contemporary political-economy research.
