If you’re a motivated Chicago-area student aiming for college but worried about cost, read this carefully. The George M. Pullman Educational Foundation Scholarship supports hardworking, community-minded students from across Cook County so they can earn a bachelor’s degree without crippling debt.
Who Pullman Scholars Are
- Students who take advantage of opportunities and create their own paths.
- Young people from the north, west, and south sides of Chicago and the suburbs.
- Students who’ve faced adversity, demonstrated resilience, and value higher education as a way to succeed.
- Leaders who contribute to their communities and plan to make a meaningful impact.
What the scholarship provides
- Up to $10,000 per year for four years (renewable).
- Ongoing support from the Pullman Foundation staff and the Pullman Scholar community during college and beyond.
Eligibility (quick checklist)
To qualify, you must:
- Be a graduating high school senior and a resident of Cook County, Illinois.
- Be enrolling full time in the fall for the first time in a bachelor’s degree program.
- Attend an accredited, Title IV-eligible, U.S.-based institution.
- Demonstrate strong financial need and be eligible for state and federal aid (you must file the FAFSA).
- Have a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident.
- Not currently be enrolled in college or hold any postsecondary degree (dual enrollment as a high school senior is allowed).
How to apply
You’ll need to:
- Complete the online application, which includes three essays and questions about your GPA, family income, high school activities, and coursework.
- Arrange for two recommendation forms from people who know your strengths (teachers, guidance counselors, mentors, employers, etc.) to be submitted on your behalf.
- Submit the application and both recommendation forms by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, February 2, 2026. The 2026 application is available via the Pullman Foundation’s application link.
One quick piece of advice from a teacher: start early. Draft your essays, ask recommenders weeks in advance, and complete the FAFSA as soon as it opens so you don’t miss any deadlines or opportunities. If you have questions about any part of the process, get help from your school counselor or the Pullman Foundation staff.
