Overview
This scholarship program, established in 2001, exists to encourage children or grandchildren of active SAE Detroit Section members to pursue engineering or science. SAE expects growing demand for graduates in these fields, so they are investing in future students now.
Who should consider applying
- You are a high school senior planning to enroll full‑time in a two‑ or four‑year engineering or science program at an ABET‑accredited college or university.
- You are the child or grandchild of an active SAE Detroit Section member (member must have a paid membership for at least one year at the time you apply).
- You meet the academic and citizenship requirements below.
Eligibility (required)
- U.S. citizen
- Child or grandchild of an active SAE Detroit Section member (paid membership ≥ 1 year at time of application)
- High school graduating student
- 3.0 or higher GPA on a 4.0 unweighted scale
- Financial need is considered (but not strictly required)
- Must enroll full-time in an ABET‑accredited engineering or science program
What you must submit (if eligible)
- Official high school transcript
- FAFSA output cover page showing your Student Aid Index (SAI) number
- At least one letter of recommendation from an adult who is not a family member (teacher, coach, pastor, employer, etc.)
How to apply (step‑by‑step)
1. After January 6, use the “Click here to apply” link on the scholarship page to start the online application.
2. Create a user ID to access and complete the application.
3. If your eligibility checks out, you will be prompted to upload the required documents listed above.
4. Complete every section of the online application. Review everything carefully — once you submit, you cannot make changes.
5. You may be asked to do a short interview with the Scholarship Committee.
Selection and notification
- Two recipients will be chosen by the SAE Detroit Section Scholarship Committee.
- Awardees will be notified by the end of June.
Award payment and permitted uses
- Each $20,000 award will be deposited into the recipient’s school account by August.
- Funds may be used for tuition or other school‑related expenses.
