Overview

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) Fellowship Program provides competitive funding for visual artists and art historians living in Virginia. Established in 1940 by John Lee Pratt, the program has awarded more than $6 million in fellowships and is administered statewide with primary support from the Pratt Endowment and the J. Warwick McClintic Jr. Fellowship Fund. The program supports both professional artists and students who demonstrate exceptional creative ability. The 2026–27 Fellowship period runs from May 2026 through May 2027.

History of the Award: The Fellowship Program was founded in 1940 through a gift from John Lee Pratt and remains primarily endowment-funded.

  • Established 1940; administered statewide by VMFA.
  • Over $6 million awarded to Virginians to date.
  • Primary funding from the Pratt Endowment with supplemental funds.

Fellowship Categories

VMFA offers four primary categories: Professional Individual, Professional Collaborative, Graduate (individual), and Undergraduate (individual). Applicants must select the category that matches their enrollment status during the Fellowship period (May 2026–May 2027), not necessarily their status at the time of application. Art History is recognized only within the Graduate category. Each category has specific eligibility and award amounts described below.

Award Values: Professional Individual and Professional Collaborative awards are $8,000; Graduate awards are $6,000; Undergraduate awards are $4,000.

  • Choose category based on status during May 2026–May 2027.
  • Art History is eligible only in the Graduate category.
  • Award amounts vary by category: $8,000, $6,000, and $4,000.

Professional Individual

The Professional Individual category is for artists who will not be enrolled in a degree-seeking program during the Fellowship period of May 2026 through May 2027. Applicants who graduate in May 2026 but do not plan to enroll in a degree program during the following academic year should apply in this category. The fellowship supports a wide range of visual arts disciplines for practicing professionals with an established record. Residency and other eligibility requirements for professionals are detailed in the Eligibility section below.

Award Value: $8,000 awarded to each Professional Individual winner.

Eligibility: Applicants must meet the Professional residency and enrollment requirements outlined in the Eligibility section.

  • For applicants not enrolled in degree programs during May 2026–May 2027.
  • $8,000 award per individual recipient.
  • Must satisfy Professional residency and other eligibility rules.

Professional Collaborative

The Professional Collaborative category allows two or more professional artists with a history of ongoing collaboration to apply together for a single fellowship. Collaborating winners receive one $8,000 fellowship to be divided among the collaborators; each collaborator must submit an application and identify the other group member(s). Only the first applicant in the group submits work samples on behalf of the collaborative team. Collaborative applicants must satisfy the same Professional eligibility requirements as individual professionals.

Award Value: One $8,000 fellowship shared among the collaborative team.

Eligibility: Collaborative applicants must meet Professional residency and non-student status requirements.

  • Designed for established collaborative teams with a documented history of partnership.
  • One application per collaborator; first applicant submits work samples.
  • $8,000 total award to be divided among winners.

Graduate (Individual)

The Graduate category is open to students enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking graduate program for the entire academic year Aug 2026 through May 2027 at an accredited institution. Art History is included as an eligible discipline only at the graduate level. Applicants who expect to graduate in May 2026 and will not enroll in a degree program during the following year should apply to the Professional category instead. Student-specific residency and enrollment rules are summarized in the Eligibility section below.

Award Value: $6,000 awarded to each Graduate winner.

Eligibility: Full-time graduate enrollment Aug 2026–May 2027 and student residency requirements apply.

  • Open to full-time graduate students enrolled Aug 2026–May 2027.
  • Includes Art History as an eligible discipline.
  • $6,000 award per recipient.

Undergraduate (Individual)

The Undergraduate category is for students enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking undergraduate program for the entire academic year Aug 2026 through May 2027 at an accredited institution. High school seniors graduating in May or June 2026 who will be enrolled full-time in an eligible undergraduate program for Aug 2026–May 2027 are also eligible to apply. Applicants who graduate in May 2026 and do not plan to remain enrolled should apply as Professional applicants instead. Student residency and other requirements are described in the Eligibility section below.

Award Value: $4,000 awarded to each Undergraduate winner.

Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate enrollment Aug 2026–May 2027 and student residency requirements apply.

  • For full-time undergraduates enrolled Aug 2026–May 2027; incoming first-year students graduating high school in May/June 2026 are eligible.
  • $4,000 award per recipient.
  • Must meet student residency and enrollment rules.

Eligibility

Eligibility varies by category; residency, enrollment status, and prior fellowship history are key determinants. Professional applicants and student applicants have different residency-duration requirements prior to the application deadline and must remain Virginia legal residents through the Fellowship period. Certain individuals are explicitly ineligible, including some recent or multiple-time recipients and full-time VMFA employees. Read each subsection carefully to determine which rules apply to your category.

Professional Eligibility:

  1. You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and a legal resident of Virginia for at least 24 consecutive months prior to the application deadline.
  2. You must remain a legal Virginia resident for the Fellowship period (May 2026–May 2027). Legal residency may be demonstrated by a Virginia driver’s license, Virginia income tax payments, and/or voter registration; verification may be requested.
  3. You cannot be a degree-seeking student during the Fellowship period.

Professional — Not Eligible:

  1. Recipients of a VMFA Professional Fellowship within the last five Fellowship cycles (2021–22 through 2025–26).
  2. Individuals who have received three or more VMFA Fellowships.
  3. Full-time VMFA employees.
  4. Undergraduate and Graduate students who will be enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program during Aug 2026–May 2027.

Student Eligibility (Graduate and Undergraduate):

  1. You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and a legal resident of Virginia for at least 12 consecutive months prior to the application deadline.
  2. You must remain a legal Virginia resident for the Fellowship period (May 2026–May 2027); documentation may be requested as noted above.
  3. Students paying in-state tuition to an accredited Virginia institution qualify as legal Virginia residents; if you do not qualify for in-state tuition you must establish Virginia residency before applying. Attending school full-time outside Virginia does not preclude eligibility if you are a legal Virginia resident.
  4. You must plan to be enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program for Aug 2026–May 2027 at an accredited college, university, or school of the arts.

Students — Not Eligible:

  1. Individuals who have received three or more VMFA Fellowships.
  2. Full-time VMFA employees.
  3. Students who will not be enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program during Aug 2026–May 2027.
  • Residency and enrollment status determine category eligibility; durations differ for professionals (24 months) and students (12 months).
  • Certain prior recipients and VMFA employees are excluded across categories.
  • Verification of residency and enrollment may be required during the review process.
