Why it exists
- The Earl Warren Scholarship honors the Honorable Earl Warren, the 14th Chief Justice of the United States and former California governor. The Warren Court played a major role in ending school segregation and reshaping American civil rights law.
- The scholarship supports future lawyers who show a strong commitment to racial justice and the potential to work as civil rights or public interest attorneys.
Who is eligible
- Rising law students who will be entering their first or second year of full-time study at an accredited law school (i.e., incoming 1Ls or 2Ls).
What the award is
- $15,000 per year for up to three years — a total of $45,000 — provided the recipient remains in good academic standing and continues to meet the scholarship requirements.
Other benefits and opportunities
- Earl Warren Scholars may apply for competitive LDF internships, externships, or guided research projects. These positions are limited and competitive, so being a scholar does not guarantee selection; interested students must apply separately.
Timeline and decisions
- Final decisions are made in mid‑August to early September. All applicants will be notified of the outcome.
