Good news: applications for the 2025–2026 Earl Warren Scholarship are now open.
A quick reminder about the scholarship’s purpose and history
- The scholarship honors the Honorable Earl Warren — the 14th Chief Justice of the United States and a former governor of California — whose leadership on the Warren Court helped end school segregation and reshape American civil rights law.
- The award is intended to support rising law students who have shown a strong commitment to racial justice and who demonstrate promise as future civil rights or public interest attorneys.
Who is eligible
- Students entering their first or second year of full-time study at an accredited law school are eligible to apply.
What the scholarship provides
- The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (LDF) awards $15,000 per year for up to three years (a total of $45,000), provided recipients remain in good academic standing and continue to meet scholarship requirements.
- Final decisions are typically made in mid‑August to early September, and all applicants will be notified of their application status.
Additional opportunities for scholars
- Earl Warren Scholars may apply for competitive LDF internships, externships, or guided research projects. These positions are limited and in high demand, so selection is not guaranteed — scholars must submit separate applications for those opportunities.
